This early twentieth-century photograph shows Alcatraz Island as it appeared during its long tenure as the U.S. Army's Pacific Branch, United States Disciplinary Barracks, a military prison that operated on the island from 1907 until 1933. Visible are the main cellhouse, the island's lighthouse -- the first built on the U.S. West Coast -- and the wharf facilities used to ferry personnel and prisoners to and from San Francisco. This military-era view predates the island's far better-known history as a federal civilian penitentiary, which began in 1934, offering a rare glimpse of Alcatraz during its lesser-documented Army administration.
