Main Entrance Gate, Presidio of San Francisco, with Sentry on Duty, c. 1910s-1920s
The main gate of the Presidio of San Francisco, photographed in the early twentieth century. A uniformed sentry stands watch beside the ornately carved stone gateposts, while an early automobile approaches along the tree-lined entrance road. The Presidio served as a key U.S. Army post guarding the Golden Gate from 1846 until its transfer to the National Park Service in 1994. Project: 218572
