The Snapshots in Time Collection
Naval Aviation Cadets and Field Skipper with N3N/N2S Primary Trainer, Fuselage No. 59
A U.S. Navy Aviation Cadet's scrapbook page pairs a portrait of his training field's commanding officer, 'Lt. Vieau,' with a group photograph of fellow cadets nicknamed 'The Intermediates.' Both images were taken beside the same open-cockpit biplane trainer, number 59, of the type used to advance cadets from primary to intermediate flight instruction during the Navy's wartime expansion of the V-5 Aviation Cadet program in the early 1940s. Such informal snapshots, hand-captioned by their owners, document the camaraderie and everyday routine of young men training to become naval aviators before deployment to fleet squadrons.
