The Snapshots in Time Collection
Scrapbook Page: Cadet Billet Residence and Piper Cub Training Groups II–III, Greenwood, South Carolina, circa 1943
This scrapbook page documents everyday life for a Naval Aviation Cadet during World War II primary flight training. The brick residence at 109 E. Cambridge Street in Greenwood, South Carolina, housed cadets boarding with a local family, a common practice at small civilian airfields contracted to provide elementary flight instruction under the Navy's V-5 Aviation Cadet Program. The accompanying snapshots show cadets posed beside a Piper J-3 Cub trainer, the ubiquitous light aircraft used for primary and elimination flight instruction before cadets advanced to service aircraft.
