Low-Level Strike Photo: Destroyed Japanese Aircraft at Wewak Airfield, New Guinea

This photograph captures the aftermath of a low-level Allied air strike on a Japanese airfield in the Wewak area of New Guinea. Wrecked Japanese aircraft lie scattered along the runway and tree line, evidence of the devastating raids Fifth Air Force units, including the 312th Bomb Group, carried out against Wewak's airfields in August 1943. These attacks destroyed more than a hundred Japanese planes on the ground in a single coordinated strike, crippling Japanese air power in the region. Project: 218561
