Aerial View of Bombed Japanese Airfield with Wrecked Aircraft, Southwest Pacific Theater
This aerial photograph, taken from a low-flying 312th Bomb Group aircraft, documents the aftermath of a strike on a Japanese-held airfield in the Southwest Pacific. Wrecked enemy aircraft litter the runway margins while fresh bomb craters pock the strip itself -- visual evidence of the systematic Allied campaign to neutralize Japanese air power on the ground during the New Guinea and Philippines campaigns of 1943-1945.
