Taken from within a B-25 Mitchell formation during a low-level strike, this photograph shows parachute-retarded fragmentation bombs -- 'parafrags' -- descending toward a Japanese airfield lined with parked enemy aircraft along the New Guinea coast. Pioneered and perfected by Fifth Air Force units such as the 312th Bomb Group, this parafrag tactic allowed medium bombers to attack from treetop height while the parachutes slowed the bombs' descent, giving the low-flying aircraft time to clear the blast before the ordnance detonated among the enemy planes below.
