Aerial Strike Photograph of Bombed Airfield with Destroyed Aircraft, Possibly 312th Bombardment Group Mission, WWII Pacific Theater
This strike photograph, associated with the 312th Bombardment Group, captures the results of a low-level attack on a Japanese-held airfield in the Pacific theater. Dozens of bomb craters pockmark the field, and the wreckage of at least two aircraft lies scattered amid the smoke. The 312th's A-20 Havocs were prized for exactly this kind of mission - fast, low-altitude strikes intended to destroy enemy aircraft on the ground before they could take to the air. Project: 218559
