This striking photograph captures the aftermath of an Allied air strike on a Japanese airfield in the Wewak area of New Guinea, with wrecked fighters and a downed twin-engine bomber scattered among fresh bomb craters. Beginning in August 1943, Fifth Air Force B-25 Mitchells -- including aircraft of the 312th Bomb Group -- conducted devastating low-level parafrag and strafing raids against Japanese airfields at Wewak, destroying scores of enemy aircraft on the ground and breaking Japanese air power in the region for the remainder of the New Guinea campaign.
