Wreckage Field, Shipping N.W. Muschu Island, 19 March 1944
Floating wreckage marks a Japanese vessel destroyed northwest of Muschu Island, off Wewak, New Guinea, on 19 March 1944. This strike photograph retains its original photo-lab caption strip, reading 'SHIPPING N.W MUSCHU I,' identifying the target, date, and camera data used to catalog the image. Wewak and its surrounding waters, including Muschu Island, were key targets for Fifth Air Force units, including the 312th Bomb Group, as Allied forces worked to sever Japanese supply and reinforcement routes along the New Guinea coast.
