This photograph freezes a stick of parachute-fragmentation bombs mid-descent over a Japanese airfield, a tactic pioneered and refined by Fifth Air Force units, including the 312th Bombardment Group. Released from low-flying B-25 Mitchells, these small parachute-retarded bombs allowed the attacking aircraft time to clear the blast area while raining destruction across parked aircraft and ground installations below.
