Parachutes carrying fragmentation bombs drift toward a Japanese airfield in this dramatic photograph, while a formation of B-25 Mitchell bombers presses the attack overhead. Known as 'parafrag' bombing, this low-altitude tactic, pioneered and refined by Fifth Air Force units including the 312th Bombardment Group, allowed aircraft to attack parked planes and ground personnel while the delayed-fuze parachute bombs gave the low-flying attackers time to escape the blast radius.
