Aerial Strike Photograph: Bombed Coastal Building Complex, 312th Bomb Group, WWII Pacific Theater
This aerial photograph, taken from a low-flying Fifth Air Force attack aircraft, documents the aftermath of a bombing strike on a coastal building complex in the Southwest Pacific theater. Smoke rises from a row of Spanish colonial-style masonry structures along a jungle-fringed shoreline, evidence of the low-altitude attack missions flown by units such as the 312th Bombardment Group against Japanese-held positions during the Philippines campaign of 1944-1945. Strike photographs like this one were used by intelligence officers to assess bomb damage and plan follow-on missions. Project: 218555
