Low-Level Strike Photograph of Rail Line and Rolling Stock, Pacific Theater (312th Bomb Group)

This wartime aerial photograph, associated with the 312th Bomb Group, captures a low-level strike against enemy rail infrastructure somewhere in the Pacific theater. Visible along the track are what appear to be parachute-retarded fragmentation bombs, a weapon favored by Fifth Air Force light and medium bomber units for destroying exposed rolling stock and rail lines while minimizing the attacking aircraft's exposure to ground fire. Rail and road interdiction missions like this one were a central part of the Allied campaign to sever Japanese supply lines in New Guinea and the Philippines. Project: 218555
