Aerial Strike Photo - Bomb Burst Near River Bridge, 312th Bomb Group

This oblique aerial photograph, taken by a crewman of the 312th Bomb Group, captures the moment of attack against a river or canal bridge believed to be part of a transportation network targeted during the group's Pacific campaign. A bomb has just struck the water near the truss span, sending up a large plume, while the surrounding countryside of cultivated fields and a riverside village remains undisturbed below. Interdiction of bridges and rail lines such as this was a central mission of medium and light bomber units in the Pacific Theater, aimed at severing enemy supply routes ahead of advancing Allied ground forces.
