Japanese Fortified Gun Position, Volcanic Rock and Log Bunker, Iwo Jima, 1945
A camouflaged Japanese defensive position on Iwo Jima, constructed from volcanic rock, palm logs, and woven sandbags, with a gun barrel visible in the firing slit. Positions like this, nearly invisible until Marines were directly upon them, formed the backbone of the island's defense-in-depth network built under General Tadamichi Kuribayashi in early 1945.
