Group Portrait of Five USAAF Officers, 579th Bombardment Squadron, England, WWII
This group photograph shows five US Army Air Forces officers of the 579th Bombardment Squadron posing outside an English country manor requisitioned for use as squadron quarters during World War II. Pilot's wings and officer insignia mark several of the men as aircrew, part of the American bomber forces that flew missions from England against occupied Europe and Germany. Such photographs, taken in quieter moments between combat missions, capture the camaraderie and everyday life of airmen stationed far from home during the height of the strategic bombing campaign.
