WWII Photo Album Page: Atsugi Airfield and Hiratsuka, Japan, 7 September 1945
A page from a serviceman's photo album records his first days in occupied Japan, beginning at Atsugi Airfield on 7 September 1945 -- the same airfield used days earlier for the initial Allied occupation landing. The accompanying photographs of a wrecked Japanese bomber and the incinerated bus fleet of Hiratsuka bear witness to the destructive power of the B-29 firebombing campaign that preceded Japan's surrender.
