This aerial photograph, preserved in a French aviator's personal wartime album, captures two Allied reconnaissance biplanes over the patchwork farmland of northern France during the First World War. Taken from a third aircraft in flight, the image reflects the routine but perilous work of aerial observation and photo-reconnaissance squadrons, whose crews mapped enemy positions and monitored troop movements along the Western Front, circa 1917-1918.
