312th Bomb Group Strike Photograph — Parafrag Bomb Train in Descent, Santiago, Isabela, Luzon, 29 May 1945
This 389th Bombardment Squadron strike photograph, taken over Santiago, Isabela province, on 29 May 1945, captures a full train of parachute-retarded fragmentation bombs descending over open terrain. Released in sequence from a low-flying B-25 Mitchell, these parafrag bombs allowed the Fifth Air Force to strike Japanese positions at treetop altitude while the parachutes delayed detonation long enough for the attacking aircraft to clear the blast radius, a hallmark low-level tactic of the Pacific air war.
