American Soldiers on Beachhead at Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, WWII
American soldiers hold a beachhead position on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, following the amphibious assault of late January-early February 1944 known as Operation Flintlock. Coral rubble and debris scattered across the beach reflect the intensity of the naval and aerial bombardment that preceded the landings, one of the first major American offensives into Japan's Central Pacific defensive perimeter.
