Distant View of USS Arizona Wreck Site, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, 1954

This 1954 photograph, taken from across the harbor, shows the resting place of USS Arizona (BB-39), sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, with the loss of 1,177 crew members. At the time this photograph was taken, the wreck was marked only by simple mooring quays and a small flag, as the now-iconic USS Arizona Memorial would not be completed until 1962. This view offers a rare glimpse of the site in its earlier, unmemorialized state. Project: 218507
