U.S. Marines Advance Through Rice Paddy Lowlands, Okinawa, 1945

U.S. Marines move in a dispersed column through the rice paddy lowlands of Okinawa during the 1945 campaign. Advancing in single file across open agricultural terrain reduced the risk of mass casualties from enemy fire, a common infantry tactic in the Pacific Theater. Okinawa's terrain, wet paddies bounded by low ridgelines, shaped much of the fighting during this final major land battle of World War II. Project: 218500
