Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr., commander of the Tenth Army, observe combat action during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. Weeks after this photograph was taken, Buckner became the highest-ranking American officer killed by enemy fire in World War II, struck by Japanese artillery on June 18, 1945, days before the battle's end.
