Naval Vessel and Schooner at Anchor, Manila Bay, Philippines, c. 1890s
This atmospheric harbor photograph from 1890s Manila Bay shows a mix of naval and merchant sailing vessels sharing the anchorage, including a steam vessel fitted with a distinctive lattice observation mast characteristic of gunboats of the period. Manila Bay served as a strategic anchorage throughout the late Spanish colonial era and would soon gain international significance as the site of Commodore George Dewey's decisive naval victory in the Spanish-American War of 1898.
