Ruined Brick Gateway and Adjoining Church Structure, Philippines, c. 1890s
This late nineteenth-century photograph depicts the ruins of a brick gateway adjoining a Spanish colonial church or convento in the Philippines. Decades of tropical weather and neglect have stripped the plaster from the masonry and allowed vegetation to overtake the structure. Such images were often taken by American military personnel or officials documenting the condition of Spanish-era public and religious buildings during the transition of colonial control at the close of the 1890s.
