This photograph shows the Gate House at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California, the U.S. Navy's first Pacific coast shipyard. Directional signs beneath its colonnaded entrance once guided shipyard workers to various shops, including pipe and machine shops and a laundry. Although filed among photographs of the Philippines, this image documents the stateside naval infrastructure that supported American operations in the Pacific during the Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War era.
