Carabao Threshing Rice in a Farm Field, Philippines, c. 1898-1900

This photograph documents a traditional method of rice threshing practiced in the Philippines at the turn of the twentieth century. Carabao, the indispensable water buffalo of Filipino agriculture, were driven over harvested rice stalks to trample and separate the grain from the straw. The towering haystack behind the workers reflects the labor-intensive, communal nature of rice cultivation that sustained rural life throughout the archipelago. Project: 218492
