This photograph shows one of the historic gates of Intramuros, the fortified Spanish colonial walled city at the heart of Manila. Built over centuries of Spanish rule, these massive stone walls and baroque gateways defended the city and its Spanish administrative and religious institutions. By the time this photograph was taken, around 1898-1900, Intramuros stood at the center of dramatic political change as Spanish rule gave way to American occupation following the Spanish-American War.
