Sailors Watching an Aircraft Jettisoned Over the Side of an Escort Carrier Flight Deck, WWII
Sailors crowd the catwalk of an escort carrier to watch as an aircraft is tipped over the side of the flight deck and into the sea. During World War II, damaged, obsolete, or unrepairable aircraft aboard the small, crowded decks of escort carriers (CVEs) were sometimes jettisoned overboard to make room for flight operations. Moments like this, though routine, drew the attention of off-duty crew members watching from the ship's gun galleries and catwalks. Project: 218490
