This original Navy caption card documents photograph 270-5, taken aboard USS Petrof Bay at 0801 on October 25, 1944, showing an F6F Hellcat flying over USS Suwannee moments after a Japanese aircraft crashed into her flight deck. This was the first of two kamikaze strikes Suwannee endured within twenty-four hours during the Battle off Samar, part of the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Project: 218483
