U.S. Navy Escort Carrier: Flight Deck and Bow Awash in Heavy Seas, WWII Pacific Theater
Viewed from the island of a U.S. Navy escort carrier, this photograph shows a wave breaking over the bow during a period of severe weather in the Pacific. The rows of stanchions along the flight deck edge normally supported safety netting for deck crews. Storms such as this tested both ship and sailor, reminding us that Pacific Fleet crews battled nature as often as the enemy. Project: 218482
