This aerial reconnaissance photograph reveals the dense concentration of traditional Okinawan family tombs that characterize the island's hillside terrain. Known as turtleback or kamekobaka tombs for their distinctive rounded shape, these substantial stone and masonry structures were prevalent throughout Okinawa and, during the 1945 campaign, were sometimes used by Japanese forces as defensive positions due to their thick construction, complicating the advance of U.S. troops through populated areas.
