Aerial View of Airfield Runways, Okinawa
This aerial photograph shows an airfield on Okinawa, its runways scarred by bomb or shell craters from the fighting that preceded its capture. Following the island's seizure in mid-1945, U.S. forces rapidly repaired and expanded such airstrips, transforming Okinawa into a major forward air base for operations against Japan. Project: 218478
