This photograph depicts the entrance to a cave or fortified position typical of the Japanese defensive network encountered by American forces during the Battle of Okinawa (April-June 1945). Japanese defenders made extensive use of natural caves and constructed tunnels in Okinawa's coral limestone ridges to shelter troops and resist the Allied advance. Here, a discarded helmet and abandoned boots lying in the grass near the cave mouth suggest the position had been cleared or overrun, leaving behind personal equipment of its former occupants.
