This photograph shows a North American B-25 Mitchell, the twin-engine medium bomber made famous by the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo in April 1942, photographed in flight over a hazy stateside landscape. The B-25's distinctive twin tail, shoulder-mounted wings, and glazed bombardier nose are clearly visible in this air-to-air view. Thousands of B-25s were built during World War II for the U.S. Army Air Forces and Allied nations, serving in every theater of the war as a low- and medium-altitude attack and bombing platform. Photographs such as this were often taken by manufacturers or the Army Air Forces to document new aircraft during acceptance or test flights before delivery to combat units. Project: 218474
