Douglas C-124 Globemaster II (Tail No. 1113), U.S. Air Force, in Flight Above Clouds and Mountains

This photograph shows a Douglas C-124 Globemaster II, tail number 1113, in flight over mountainous terrain. Entering service in 1950, the C-124 was the largest and most capable heavy-lift transport of its era, able to carry tanks, artillery pieces, and hundreds of fully equipped troops through its distinctive clamshell nose doors. It formed the backbone of U.S. Air Force strategic airlift throughout the 1950s and into the Vietnam War. Project: 218472
