This photograph shows a North American Mustang, serial 465169, modified with an extended canopy to accommodate a second crew member in tandem seating. Many surplus P-51D Mustangs were converted after World War II into two-seat trainers, allowing check pilots to instruct in this high-performance fighter before pilots flew it solo. The Mustang remained in front-line and training service well into the early Cold War years. Project: 218472
