Douglas A-4 Skyhawk (BuNo 137818) 'NAVY' on Airfield Ramp with Canopy Open
This photograph shows a Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, bureau number 137818, on the ramp with its canopy open. Nicknamed 'Scooter' and 'Bantam Bomber' for its diminutive size, the A-4 was designed by Ed Heinemann to be far lighter and cheaper than contemporary jets while still delivering a substantial payload. It became a workhorse of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps light attack aviation from its introduction in 1956 through extensive service in the Vietnam War. Project: 218472
