North American B-25 Mitchell Medium Bomber, Tail No. 264803, Factory Ramp
This factory photograph shows a North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber, serial 264803, displaying the star-only national insignia used on American military aircraft between 1942 and mid-1943. The B-25 became one of the most versatile Allied bombers of World War II, serving in every combat theater and famously executing the 1942 Doolittle Raid on Japan. Additional aircraft, including what appears to be a twin-boom P-38 Lightning fighter, are visible on the ramp behind it, reflecting the high tempo of wartime aircraft production and testing in Southern California.
