North American F-86 Sabre Jet Fighter, 'Maryland' Air National Guard Markings, Tail No. 0-31375
This photograph shows a North American F-86 Sabre in the markings of a Maryland-based Air National Guard unit, identified by the state name and squadron emblem on its tail. The F-86 Sabre was the United States' premier swept-wing jet fighter of the Korean War era and remained in frontline and Air National Guard service throughout the 1950s. Its bare-metal finish, underwing drop tanks, and 'U.S. AIR FORCE' fuselage lettering reflect standard markings of the period, when the Sabre served as a fighter-interceptor for continental air defense.
