Bell P-63 Kingcobra Fighter Aircraft on Ramp, World War II
A Bell P-63 Kingcobra fighter sits on the ramp in this World War II-era U.S. Army Air Forces photograph. Developed from the earlier P-39 Airacobra, the P-63 retained its distinctive mid-engine layout, automobile-style cockpit door, and nose-mounted cannon firing through the propeller hub, while adding a larger tail and improved high-altitude performance. Though it saw limited American combat use, thousands of Kingcobras were supplied to Allied nations, most notably the Soviet Union, under Lend-Lease. Project: 218470
