North American B-25 Mitchell Medium Bomber in Flight, Tail Number 112823, Over Mountainous Terrain

This photograph shows a North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber banking over rugged mountain terrain, its olive-drab camouflage and plain white star insignia dating the image to the early years of World War II, before the addition of red-and-white bars to U.S. national markings in mid-1943. The B-25's dorsal turret, visible here with twin machine guns, provided defensive firepower against enemy fighters. The Mitchell went on to serve with distinction in every combat theater of the war, most famously in the 1942 Doolittle Raid. Project: 218468
