USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) Crew Jettisoning Wrecked Aircraft Tail Section Overboard

Crewmen aboard the escort carrier USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) push the wrecked tail section of an aircraft over the side of the flight deck and into the sea. Known as 'deep-sixing,' this practice allowed carrier crews to quickly clear damaged or unsalvageable planes from the deck so that flight operations could continue without interruption - a routine but visually striking task during the intense pace of Pacific carrier warfare.
