Japanese 'Green Cross' Surrender Delegation Aircraft, Ie Shima, August 1945
On August 19, 1945, two Japanese Mitsubishi G4M 'Betty' bombers, repainted white with green cross markings for safe passage, landed on the island of Ie Shima near Okinawa carrying Japanese envoys to negotiate the terms of surrender. Guarded closely by American troops, the delegation was transferred to U.S. aircraft bound for Manila. This photograph captures that historic aircraft on the ground, ringed by armed GIs, marking one of the final chapters of the Pacific War before Japan's formal surrender aboard USS Missouri weeks later.
