Douglas C-124 Globemaster II, MATS Serial 01263, U.S. Air Force

The Douglas C-124 Globemaster II, seen here in Military Air Transport Service markings, was one of the largest cargo aircraft of its era, capable of hauling tanks, artillery, and troops across the globe. Powered by four massive Pratt & Whitney R-4360 radial engines and featuring distinctive clamshell nose doors for drive-through loading, the C-124 formed the backbone of American strategic airlift throughout the 1950s and into the Vietnam War era.
