This photograph shows a Douglas C-118A Liftmaster, the military transport version of the civilian DC-6, in the service of the Military Air Transport Service (MATS). Marked with 'MATS' on its tail and 'MILITARY AIR TRANSPORT SERVICE' along its fuselage, this four-engine aircraft was part of the U.S. Air Force's global airlift network during the 1950s, ferrying personnel, cargo, and dignitaries between American bases worldwide during the Cold War.
