The Douglas A4D-1 Skyhawk, seen here flying low over rugged desert terrain, was one of the most successful light attack aircraft ever built for the U.S. Navy. Designed by Ed Heinemann to be small, light, and inexpensive, the delta-wing Skyhawk entered fleet service in 1956 and went on to serve for decades aboard Navy and Marine Corps carriers, seeing extensive combat in Vietnam.
