Heavy Seas Alongside USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80), WWII Pacific Theater
Heavy seas break against the hull of the escort carrier USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) during World War II Pacific operations. Escort carriers, built on merchant-hull frames, were notably vulnerable to rough weather — a hazard that became tragically evident during typhoons encountered by the Pacific Fleet in 1944 and 1945.
