Liaison Aircraft on Flight Deck, USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80)
A small liaison-type aircraft rests on the flight deck of the escort carrier USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) during World War II. Escort carriers like the Petrof Bay routinely embarked small observation and liaison planes for spotting and communication duties in support of amphibious operations, in addition to their standard complement of fighters and torpedo bombers. Sailors manning the deck-edge gun positions look on as the aircraft is readied on the flight deck. Project: 218460
